Mountain Operations Manager

Giants Ridge, managed by Guest Services, Inc. is hiring a Mountain Operations Manager to work with our Director of Mountain Operations to supervise the day to day running of the mountain and grounds to include ski and trails.


The Mountain Operations Manager is responsible for supervising the day to day operations of the mountain and surrounding grounds at Giants Ridge. This includes but is not limited to; lift operation, lift maintenance, snowmaking, grooming, trail maintenance, vehicle and equipment maintenance, as well as assist with coordinating buildings and grounds maintenance.  The Mountain Operations Manager reports to the Director of Mountain Operations, and also works with other facility directors including the General Manager, the Director of Mountain Sports, and other resort Directors.  The Mountain Operations Manager is responsible for the hiring, training, and scheduling of all Mountain Operations staff.  The Mountain Operations Manager is also responsible for all safety compliance relating to Mountain Operations.


Duties include:

  • Create maintenance plans and logs for all aspects of Mountain Operations

  • Ensuring that all seasonal maintenance is completed well in advance of the season commencement

  • Responsible to ensure that all supervisors have the adequate tools and supplies to ensure effective maintenance and job completion

  • Develop and track budgets as well as long range budgets and capital plans

  • Recruit and hire year round and seasonal Mountain Operations staff

  • Work with accounting to purchase needed equipment and materials

  • Check the accuracy of payroll, and ensure that it is submitted on time

  • Responsible for employee safety compliance and work with risk management to ensure guest safety

  • Work with contractors, municipalities, trail organizations and other public entities

  • Attend training seminars and events to increase industry knowledge and experience

  • Work with the Director of Mountain Operations to oversee capital projects

  • Work with the Director of Mountain Sports to ensure that the facility is properly prepared to both general guests as well as event guests


Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least three to five years mountain operation experience, relating to snowmaking, fleet maintenance, lift maintenance, grooming, and mountain safety

  • Minimum two year degree in a mechanical technology field or higher degree

  • 3 years supervisory experience that involves giving written and verbal work instructions, directing and mentoring staff, working with guests, vendors, and volunteers

  • Basic Computer skills with proficiency in excel, word, and outlook

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance, and mechanical functions

  • Ability to lead people, manage time, and accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Must possess a valid State of MN Class D Driver License

  • Self-motivated and able to work outdoors in all types of Minnesota weather

  • Possession of Special Engineer boiler license or ability to obtain

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly, 80 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally

  • Snow Cat and heavy equipment operation experience

  • Familiarity with all types of snowmaking equipment

  • Willingness to work days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and overtime as needed to ensure a quality product

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate of accredited Ski Area Management Program

  • 3+ years of mountain management experience

  • Class A Drivers License with air brake endorsement

  • Extensive knowledge of Detachable and Fixed grip chair lifts

  • Industry qualifications including cutters camp, lift maintenance certification, etc.

  • Experience with OSHA compliance as well as extensive mountain safety experience

  • Knowledge of mountain bike park maintenance and operation

  • General Construction experience
